About the Seminar

We asked you what you would like to hear and from the results we’ve put together a tailored seminar –  one for the vets and one for the nurses. The vet stream will be covering diabetic ketoacidosis and hypoadrenocorticies crisis, and the nurse stream will be discussing shock and anaphylaxis.

Vet Stream: Diabetic Ketoacidosis and Hypoadrenocorticies Crisis

Is the management of complicated endocrine emergencies something that makes you shudder? Does the idea of calculating sodium fluid dilutions or glucose and potassium supplementation that might need to be altered every couple of hours, make you want to run for the hills?
Come and join us for a night of stimulating discussion around the pathophysiology of these common endocrine emergencies and their practical management.
Speaker Dr Hubert Hiemstra

Nurse Stream:  Shock and Anaphylaxis for Nurses

What do heart failure, bees and trauma have in common? The answer will SHOCK you!
Come and spend an evening discussing common causes, presentation and management of shock in the veterinary patient with our team of amazing ECC nurses.
Speakers Amanda Atkinson and Kate Tinney

Our Speakers

Amanda Atkinson

Dr Hubert Hiemstra

Hubert is an emergency veterinarian and host of the Vet Vault and Vet Vault Clinical Podcasts. His veterinary career has spanned 2 decades and three continents, including starting and running his own emergency practice in Perth for the better part of a decade.

In 2019 Hubert started the Vet Vault podcast with Dr Gerardo Poli to help vets fall back on love with the vet profession, and in 2021 they added their clinical podcasts where Hubert uses his vast ignorance to ask all of the dumb questions that we all have of a bunch of very smart people, and in this session he’ll share some of the stuff that he’s learnt along the way.

Amanda Atkinson

Amanda Atkinson

Amanda has been nursing for 22 years. While waiting to start uni she began to start work as a kennel hand, this is where she fell in love with the industry. Instead of heading to uni to pursue a law degree she started her cert 4 in vet nursing. Amanda has been most of her career in mixed practice and began her emergency nursing career with AES 15 years ago and still works at a mixed practice. Amanda has been involved in the Pet pep program and is a mentor for the Improve International Elevate Emergency Nursing Program (designed and developed by AES). Amanda is also the crazy cat lady with 6 cats who all get along and groom each other. Amanda is also terrified of spiders. She is much happier wrangling a snake or dealing with an aggressive cat than a tiny spider.
