Happy Vet Nurse and Vet Technician Day | Written by Phil Vidins, Vet Tech at Animal Emergency Service, Underwood

It’s 11pm: the tide of incoming patients has subsided, giving the techs and nurses a moment to catch their breath after a barrage of triages, admissions, and phone calls over the past five hours. They set about administering treatments, monitoring hospitalised patients, preparing for upcoming procedures, and cleaning up after the rush hour. If time permits, they tackle other essential tasks vital to keeping the busy hospital running smoothly—ordering stock, performing maintenance on life-saving equipment, and deep cleaning every inch of the facility.

Suddenly, the “Ding, ding, ding” of the emergency bell slices through the air. This is followed by the heart-wrenching sound of an owner wailing in despair as their beloved pet is brought “out the back” to the waiting team. Without a moment’s hesitation, the techs and nurses gather around the crash bench. Within 15 seconds, this team of highly trained veterinary professionals is ready for whatever comes through those doors.

This is the life of emergency veterinary technicians and nurses.

As they surround the distressed pet, their faces reveal a steely resolve combined with tender compassion. Each member of the team knows their role implicitly, their coordination a testament to rigorous training and experience. The situation is dire—the patient is violently seizing, foaming at the mouth, and every second counts.

One technician holds the patient steady, stabilising the pet’s forelimb and raising the vein for the IV catheter placement. This requires a delicate balance of strength and precision, ensuring minimal movement to facilitate the catheter insertion.

Simultaneously, a vet nurse expertly inserts the IV catheter into the compromised patient. This task is immensely challenging due to the seizing movements, but with skilled hands and focused attention, they successfully secure the catheter. Immediate access to a vein is crucial for administering life-saving medications and ongoing treatment.

Meanwhile, a third team member is quickly connecting multiparameter monitoring equipment. They attach the ECG leads, SPO2 sensor, and the cuff for blood pressure monitoring. Each device provides vital data, forming a comprehensive picture of the patient’s status.

A fourth technician performs manual monitoring, tracking the patient’s heart rate, pulse, respiration rate, respiratory effort, and temperature. Using a stethoscope, they listen intently to the patient’s chest, attuned to any signs of distress or abnormalities. This hands-on approach ensures that no subtle changes go unnoticed.

At the same time, another nurse is preparing the IV fluids and emergency medications. They work swiftly but carefully, double-checking dosages and ensuring everything is ready for immediate administration. They also prepare endotracheal (ET) tubing, should it be required, to secure the patient’s airway and provide assisted ventilation if needed.

The final team member consoles the frantic owner whilst gathering a history, knowing that the slightest details can provide life-saving insights.

This is a brief snapshot of the day-to-day lives of emergency veterinary nurses and technicians, and it must be noted that this represents a very well-resourced veterinary team, some teams may perform all these duties with only two veterinary nurses or technicians!

These veterinary professionals are the unsung heroes in the veterinary world. They are the heart and soul of animal healthcare, providing crucial touchpoints between veterinarian and patient. It’s a role that requires a deep well of empathy, patience, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of every animal they encounter.

The demands placed on these professionals are immense, to the extent that numerous studies have found them to be among the most burnout-prone cohorts in our community. The front lines of veterinary care are intense, filled with moments that test physical and emotional endurance. Imagine having to comfort a distraught pet owner while simultaneously stabilising their cat who has just been hit by a car or the precision required to assist in a delicate surgery while monitoring anaesthesia levels with impeccable accuracy to ensure the patient’s safety.

Veterinary technicians and nurses handle a broad spectrum of responsibilities. They conduct diagnostic tests, administer medications, assist in surgeries, manage patient records, and educate pet owners about home care. Beyond their clinical duties, these individuals bring a human element to veterinary care, bridging the gap with compassion and understanding.

Yet, their work doesn’t always end when their shifts do. Many carry the emotional weight of their patients’ stories with them, their minds often wandering back to the cat with kidney failure or the puppy showing signs of recovery after a severe illness. This emotional resilience is complemented by the camaraderie and mutual support found within their teams — knowing they have one another’s backs through thick and thin.

Veterinary Technician and Nurse Appreciation Day is our opportunity to shine a spotlight on these dedicated professionals. It’s a day to acknowledge their relentless hard work, their exceptional skills, and the boundless compassion they show every day.

When we think of veterinary health care, we often picture the veterinarians themselves. But behind every great vet is a team of technicians and nurses who make it all possible. They are the ones who ensure that every patient receives gentle, thorough, and loving care; who stay late to comfort an anxious cat; who wake up early to check on an overnight patient; and who never hesitate to go the extra mile for the animals and their owners.
